Dollface

The visionary debut album from Northern California born, LA based indie folk songwriter Hana Bryanne arrived September 15th, 2023

There’s a joke Hana Bryanne has been dying to tell you. Her debut LP Dollface is a study of contradictions: it’s folk music about the internet, lullabies about sexual violence, dance music about her mother’s illness. The album sees her twangy indie sensibilities take on new colors amidst her heart-wrenching meditations on love and loneliness.

Listeners were first introduced to the world of the album on Visions, Bryanne’s first single in nearly two years. The song’s weeping strings and defiant lyrics reminded listeners of her first project, the Holy Ground EP, easing them gently back into Bryanne’s world before she dove off the cliff into new waters. Clementine, the fourth and final single from the album, is singular pulsing indie-pop. Inspired by the 80s new wave that filled her home as a child, it tells the story of her mother’s battle with Long COVID.

Despite its sonic range, the constant in Bryanne’s work is her emotional honesty. She finds a home in iconic landscapes, from New England train rides to California coasts and the backseat of teenage lovers’ cars. Beyond merely confessional, her songwriting has an incisive bite. “I’ve been the baby of the family/I’ve never done anything wrong,” she sings on the album’s outro, Dollface Reprise, a tongue-and-cheek recounting of youth’s unflinching arrogance and raging insecurity. Hana Bryanne is a prophet for a new generation of young women: complex, unflinching, endlessly sure.
